Porn in plain sight

We’ve all been in the grocery store line at one time or another where we glanced to our peripheral only to see provocative images and headlines paraded across the front of a magazine cover. Of course, now these same periodicals offer online versions as well, clickable from frequented locations like Snapchat (the overwhelming favorite communication choice of young people today, by a landslide).

Do you think your kids ever peek at these?

I asked a handful of kids last week. “When you’re browsing Snap stories and you see an interesting Cosmo or Daily Mail headline… do you click on it?”

Every kid I asked said yes.

Here’s my sex talk

In the youth ministry world, February is the time to talk about sex and dating. So I thought I’d give you the outline of one of my sex talks (or Download Youth Ministry put their professional flair on it HERE with readymade slides, the complete transcript and small group questions, all for just a few bucks. Those guys rock!)

In this talk I equip young people how to actually save sex in a world that exploits it. In other words, how can I “flee”? (This talk is drawn from chapter 2 in my book to teens, Sex Matters.)

TALK TITLE: What do you mean, “Flee”?

INTRODUCTION: I tell a story of a teenaged boy and his girlfriend going to her house after school. Her parents aren’t home, they go upstairs to her room “to talk”, begin kissing, the laying down… and next thing they know they end up having sex.

The young man goes to his youth pastor and tells him, “We didn’t intend to do it. It just happened. We couldn’t stop! Why?”

Ariana Grande upset about being objectified

Pop singer Ariana Grande went on a Tweet rant about being “objectified.”

I’m sorry. I’m trying my hardest to not roll on the ground laughing.

I honestly checked the date. Nope. Not April 1^st. I was about to check Quentin Tarantino’s Twitter and see if he was upset about gratuitous violence.

why STDs are at an unprecedented high

The CDC posted a press release last month revealing STDs are at an unprecedented high in the U.S. In fact, “despite recent declines, 2015 was the second year in a row in which increases were seen in all three nationally reported STDs.” It will be interesting to see where these numbers come in at the end of 2016. The increases from just 2014 to 2015 ranged from a 5.9% increase of chlamydia to a 19.0% increase of P&S syphilis.

Will Your Kids Watch “Easy” on Netflix?

Today’s young people love Netflix. It’s mobile, it’s commercial free, and as a bonus… most parents have no idea what their kids are watching.

That’s why parents should probably be aware of the new sexually-charged Netflix original series, Easy, streaming on their devices starting today, September 22^nd. The show follows (and I quote) “diverse Chicagoans fumbling through the modern maze of love, sex, technology and culture.”

I’m not telling you to write your congressman and get the show banned. I’m just suggesting, in a world where 49% of 15-20-year-olds stream on demand content like Netflix daily, and 78% of “on their own Millennials” have subscriptions to these entertainment venues… it might be good to know what exactly it is they’re watching, how we can use Netflix binging for bonding, and how to respond if we discover them watching mature or adult content (which is why I’m going to provide you with 3 ways to overreact react when this happens).

From Disney Star to Vixen

Demi Lovato is in the headlines again with her sexy new release, Body Say.

Sadly, her story isn’t very unique:

Disney star. My own girls watched her show Sonny with a Chance and the Camp Rock movies.
At age 18, she dropped out of a tour because of some “emotional and physical issues” (self-mutilation, eating disorders).
She returned to the scene with a new confidence… in fact… the name of her new album last year was Confident, sporting her new sexy look… and sexy new songs (you probably our post about her song Cool for the Summer, a song about her desire for a lesbian hook up).

The Draw of Nudity

In 2013 The Discovery Channel launched a show with the title Naked and Afraid. It’s now in its 5^th season. The following year VH1 launched Dating Naked. The Season 3 premier was on last week.

What’s next… Bowling Naked?

Nudity has been a draw for audiences since before I was born, but now, much more commonplace. Many of you might recall an article I wrote on the subject in 2013, The Naked Truth. That previous TV season had seen a 407 percent increase of “blurred nudity” than the season prior.

Are Today’s Teens Taking Less Risks?

Are kids having more sex than years prior?

Are kids smoking more or less pot?

What about texting and driving?

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) just released their brand new Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a study released every other year asking teenagers about risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking, fighting at school, sexual activity… and even if they wear a seatbelt. The report breaks the numbers down by state, race, or grade, as well as providing national averages.

Here’s a few highlights:

41% of high school students have had sexual intercourse (58% of seniors).
30% of high school students are currently sexually active (46% of seniors)
39% of high school students have ever used marijuana (50% of seniors)
22% of high school students are current users of marijuana (28% of seniors)
42% of high school students have texted while driving a car in the last 30 days (61% of seniors)

Dialoguing About Gender Identity

There’s been a lot of buzz about gender identity recently, and young people are taking note. The question is… what are they resolving as true?

I stumbled on two very helpful resources in the past few weeks that provide really good information and provoke meaningful conversation. One is a video that simply makes you stop and think logically for a moment. The other is an extremely insightful statement to educators and legislators published by The American College of Pediatricians that looks at gender ideology medically and scientifically.

The Limp Truth about Porn

The most recent cover of Time Magazine had just one caption:

“Why young men who grew up with Internet porn are becoming advocates for turning it off.”

The cover article was titled, Porn and the Threat to Virility (subscription required). The point was simple. Young men who regularly visit porn, are struggling to perform sexually in real life.

The research is fairly new… at least since high speed Internet has become commonplace. I cited similar studies in my chapters on porn in More Than Just the Talk (for parents) and Sex Matters (for young people). Guys are spending more time watching porn than ever before because it’s more readily available. The more they watch, the more the “same ol’ thing” just isn’t stimulating. So they pursue more extreme material. Pretty soon, this porn addict is used to piles of perfect looking women doing everything imaginable… and their real life sex partner isn’t enough to get the blood flowing… literally.
