No Wonder Our Kids Listen to It

Posted on: 02/9/09 12:34 PM | by Jonathan McKee

Why are adults surprised that kids listen to raunchy music?

Kids are only following their example.

Last night the Grammys gave us a true glimpse of what adults value in this world. The Grammys has a long history of being THE music awards show. Unlike the Teen Choice Awards, or many of the MTV awards shows, The Grammys are chosen by adults. Then why was Lil Wayne nominated for more than anyone else, 8 Grammys?

Do these adults even know what this guy is singing about? (you can take a little peek at his content in this article) Maybe Lil Wayne should take this opportunity to ask their daughter on a date?

Maybe the same could be said about Kid Rock, Robert Plant and others at the show last night. But I think most adults are probably a little more comfortable with the messages coming from the albums of U2 and Coldplay than the young Mr. Wayne. Or maybe, in today’s world lyrical content just doesn’t matter. Because last night we awarded Wayne with trophies for the explicit album Tha Carter III, and three other songs, including the song Lollipop, an explicit song about oral sex.

“You’re a foul mouthed pervert. Here’s your trophy.”  (pause)  “But kids, you watch your mouths!”

David wrote about the blurring of the line between music for adults and teens last week in our Youth Culture Window article, The 2009 Grammys: Do Adults Like the Same Music as Teens?

The 7 Sins of Worship Leading

Posted on: 02/1/09 2:20 PM | by Jonathan McKee

I think I’ve heard more whining, complaining and disagreements about worship than any other subject in the church. Sad, but today’s “American Idol” mentality has been known to spill over into the worship service. As a congregation, instead of lifting our praise to God, we often listen with a critical ear, “voting off” those we don’t like.

Those of you who have used our youth ministry resources for any time are probably familiar with our THE SOURCE PODCAST. In this podcast, we almost always share the “Seven Sins of…” a certain topic. This is just a fun way to share how “NOT” to do something.

In our brand new episode of THE SOURCE PODCAST, Episode #22, I join up with the worship band Dutton as they share The Seven Sins of Worship Leading. Some of you might recognize Dutton from their recent tour at the Planet Wisdom events- they are the worship band for that conference. Others might know them as the band that played at UBC, back in the day when Crowder was out of town. These guys do a great job.

I really enjoyed this podcast. We had a lot of fun… and tackled some big issues at the same time. Anyone who leads worship or is involved in planning worship services should take a listen to this podcast.

One of the reasons I personally enjoyed this podcast is because my daughter Alyssa joined us for the recording. Great fun.

Lyrics “Under the Radar” of Parents

Posted on: 01/20/09 9:47 AM | by Jonathan McKee

I’m so used to today’s music being blatantly raunchy and sexual, I’m almost surprised when musicians use sneaky tactics to slip messages under the radar of parents. But that’s exactly what Britney has done with this new song on her popular new album Circus… she’s dropping the “F bomb” without actually saying it.

The song is If You Seek Amy. It looks innocent enough when you read it… but go ahead and say it like she does in the album. Read this outloud: “But all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to if you seek amy.”

Whoops!

David does an incredible job unveiling this in this week’s Youth Culture Window article.

Update: According to this Aussie newspaper, Britney might be changing the name of the song for some radioplay.

Using Popular Music to Springboard Discussions

Posted on: 12/22/08 9:05 AM | by Jonathan McKee

As I look back at the most popular music of 2008, I can’t say that I’m happy with the content that found its way into kids’ iPods. Most of it was highly sexualized and foul. Unfortunately, sex sells. This year’s Top 10 downloaded songs are, by majority, no exception.

In our last Youth Culture Window article of the year, David and I reviewed the Top 10 Downloaded Songs as charted by The Nielson Company. I find this list fascinating, not only because it reflects some of the most popular music of the year, but also the fact that downloaded songs offer explicit lyrics… and most parents have no idea what is on their kids’ iPods.

Do you know what’s on your kids’ iPods?

In this article we quickly review what kids have listened to in the last year and a little about each artist. Then we encourage parents and youth workers to dialogue with their kids about this music and this content.

Soulja Boy’s Swag is… What?

Posted on: 10/29/08 10:21 AM | by Jonathan McKee

Soulja Boy is back with a new dance. If you don’t recognize his name… your kids do. In the Fall of 2007, Soulja Boy’s song Crank That (The “Superman” song) dominated the charts, holding the #1 spot for eternity. But his song isn’t what launched Soulja Boy… it was his dance.

Kids in elementary schools across the country were learning the “Superman” dance. My own daughter came home from junior high school last year informing me that it was required learning for P.E. (nice). But then people started figuring out what this “Superman” song actually meant. (which is funny… because I guess the fact that he was calling girls “bitches” and “ho’s” wasn’t enough to upset people initially)

Now Soulja Boy is back with a new song and a new dance. This time he isn’t talking foul or objectifying women… he just kindly wants to let us know how much money he made doing it (hence the footage of him blowing his nose into hundred dollar bills, holding up wads of cash, and flaunting buckets of hundreds). Take a peek for yourself.

(Is anyone else wondering how this guy ever got popular???? Wow! Our taste in music has hit a new low! I’m not even talking about lyrics… I’m talking about “singing offkey.” Can you imagine this guy at an American Idol tryout!)

In case you missed it… here’s some of these lyrics:

i got a question why they hattin on me,
i got a question why they hattin on me
i aint did nuthin to em, but count this money
and put my team on, now my whole clic stunnin
boy wassup, yeeeea
boy wassup, yeeeea

when i was 9 years old, i put it in ma head
that ima die for this gold
(soulja boy tellem)
boy wassup, yeeeea
hopped up off tha bed
turn ma swag on
took a look in tha mirror said wassup
yeeeeea im gettin money (ooh) x2

In this MTV article (or you can watch their MTV News video) he tips his hand about his goals with this new song:

It’s just showing all my success from my first album. The first chapter of Soulja Boy in the music industry. I went platinum, 5 million ringtones. A whole lot of records I broke. It’s a lifestyle record. Speaking on my success, showing how my life changed since I became a celebrity. It’s basically saying, ‘I’m back.’

It will be interesting to see what kids think when they listen to this song and see this video? (because they ARE listening) It’s the same message they’ve been hearing recently from T.I.’s Whatever You Like. “Money brings happiness.” Maybe that’s what they want to hear.

Hmmmmmmm.

Britney Baring All Once Again

Posted on: 10/17/08 11:15 PM | by Jonathan McKee

Sex sells. Mariah knows it, Madonna knows it, Christina knows it… and Britney definitely knows it!

Britney knows it so well, her new song “Womanizer” just made the biggest leap in the history of Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart. It’s no coincidence that her video features her naked in a sauna throughout the video, half dressed and sensual on several other occasions… while the whole time, ironically, singing about a guy that’s a womanizer. (Which makes me wonder if I am just missing another video featuring him singing about her being skanky?)

This racy video is now the #1 downloaded video on iTunes, the #1 featured video on MTV.com’s music video pics, and available to see everywhere for free from YouTube to AOL.com videos.

Yes…Britney doesn’t actually show those crucial few inches that would declare this actual “R-rated” nudity, so it’s being played everywhere. The question I have is this: are your teenagers going to steer away from clicking on this when they stumble upon it on YouTube?

The Chart-topping Message of “So What”

Posted on: 10/1/08 12:03 PM | by Jonathan McKee

Pink is back on the top of the charts… and boy is she pissed!

Her angry new song, “So What” is heard everywhere- radio, internet, iPods and ringtones. Her video is being downloaded by the millions. Kids know the song. Many have seen the video. The question is, “What message are kids getting?” and “How can we talk to them about this message?”

You’re in luck. On Monday I just penned a discussion that youth workers and parents can use with their kids about this trendy new song.

Pink, the #7 most popular artist on MTV’s coveted list, has been around for a while. In 2000, Pink’s name became known when she jumped into the Top Five of the charts with her hit song, “Get the Party Started.” She’s bounced around the charts since, but only recently rose to #1 with this heated new song, “So What” that she performed live at the recent MTV Video Music Awards. Now “So What,” a song expressing Pink’s reaction to hurt, has been riding #1 for a while. Today, it’s #2 in the Billboard Hot 100, #2 iTunes song, #3 iTunes video, and #3 iTunes Top Ringtone.

The video shows Pink’s reaction to pain. She responds with denial (“I’m alright!”) and violence. (“I wanna start a fight!”) it’s a message you just have to see for yourself.

Here’s her video, including Pink’s live introduction on MTV2.

So how should our kids react when bad things happen? Should they take Pink’s advice and get drunk, vandalize, and get into fights?

That’s what we discussion in this new MUSIC DISCUSSION on our web page.

When Paparazzi Catch Miley… Going to Church?

Posted on: 09/23/08 9:23 AM | by Jonathan McKee

It’s amazing how many emails I get asking about Miiley as a role model for our young girls today. Yes, Miley’s been in and out of the news for good and bad. But you gotta love it when a celeb’s top news is, “Miley & Underwear Model Go to Church.”

Miley’s been getting all kind of flack lately for dating some 20-year-old guy (personally, I think that’s an issue to take up with her parents, not her). But hey… at least she took the guy to church.  🙂

I love this pic from msn.com’s gossip page!

This is also a pretty good representation of the “Gen Y” church apparel.

Top 100 Songs in the Last 50 Years

Posted on: 09/14/08 8:33 AM | by Jonathan McKee

Anyone frequenting my blog knows that I often site the music charts, noting what kids are listening to today. Here’s a little peice of history that’s just plain fun.

Billboard’s Hot 100 list is now 50 years old, and to celebrate, they put together the All-Time Top Songs from the last 50 years (and it’s hilarious to read the comments and bantar that follows the list… a lot of people all riled up about a song THEY think should have made the list. Then one guy, obviously Billboard’s guy, straightens them out with all the facts of how long those respective songs actually made the list, etc. I think I had more fun reading the comments than the actual list!). Most of the songs have a Youtube link to the video.

Here’s the top 10 from their list…

#1 is Chubby Checker’s THE TWIST

2. SMOOTH
Santana Featuring Rob Thomas

3. MACK THE KNIFE
Bobby Darin

4. HOW DO I LIVE
LeAnn Rimes

5.  MACARENA (BAYSIDE BOYS MIX)
Los Del Rio

6. PHYSICAL
Olivia Newton-John

7. YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE
Debby Boone

8. HEY JUDE
The Beatles

9. WE BELONG TOGETHER
Mariah Carey

10. UN-BREAK MY HEART
Toni Braxton

Post VMA Regrets?

Posted on: 09/11/08 9:08 AM | by Jonathan McKee

There’s a lot of hype this week following the “purity bashing” and “slut bashing” that went on at the MTV Video Music Awards this past Sunday night.

If you missed the craziness, David and I summed it all up in our Post VMA Thoughts article Monday.

Basically, the host of the show, British comic Russell Brand, bashed purity all night, using the Jonas Bros as the main target of his jests. Then Jordin Sparks snapped back with a few thoughts of her own, defending purity pledges and ending with, “Not every guy and girl wants to be a slut.”

Now we’ve seen a myriad of articles and blogs chiming in on the aftermath. OMG! Yahoo reports:

The Jonas Brothers have no beef with Russell Brand after he mocked their virginity on Sunday’s 2008 MTV Video Music Awards.

“For us it’s cool to see that he recognizes we are gentlemen,” Nick Jonas told BBC’s Radio 1.

Sparks says that she wishes she would have worded things differently, but doesn’t regret that she said something. Hollywood Insider gives the scoop:

Attending the show for the first time, the American Idol winner went off-script after being agitated by host Russell Brand’s repeated mocking of the Jonas Brothers’ promise rings. “It’s something I feel strongly about,” she tells EW.com. “I wish I would’ve worded it differently — that somebody who doesn’t wear a promise ring isn’t necessarily a slut — but I can’t take it back now. It was a split-second thing, and it came out kind of wrong. Still, I don’t regret it.”

I don’t regret that she said it either. Her comments can’t be torn out of context. She stood up after 90 minutes of crude jokes, sexual references and racy songs… her comments were the lone voice siding with purity (because no one else spoke up). Her message had to be that polarized to even break through the smoke. It didn’t insinuate that people who aren’t virgins are sluts at all. It communicated that those who were making it light that night probably were sluts.

It was a risky move for Sparks. It wasn’t a popular opinion to verbalize. It was the highlight of the show.
