FCC Considers More Sex and Nudity

The rumor is true, the FCC is considering allowing more sex and nudity on televisions. Their website posted a public notice last month proposing an end to “the prohibition of expletives and certain images of nudity on television.” Then clean shows like CBS’s Two and a Half Men could finally let loose and tell racy jokes… uh… oh wait…

Sure, network TV is already pretty racy, and blurred/pixilated nudity is increasing logarithmically, but if you want to know where this FCC consideration is heading, just watch a single episode of HBO’s Girls or Game of Thrones (Actually… don’t. But read how some parents are responding when they are exposed to the “soft core porn” of these popular new shows).

People are reacting to this FCC news in two ways:

  1. Utter disbelief. Yes, they actually think it’s a hoax. Urban legends site SNOPES actually had to post a rumor-buster showing it’s true. Is this just another cry wolf? We’ve heard these predictions before.
  2. Overwhelming outrage. The FCC first gave the public until May 20 to weigh in on the issue, but America responded with 95,000 comments, where the highest proceeding was 320. So now the date has been extended to June.

Does the outrage surprise you?

Sure, I expected the Parent’s Television Council (PTC) and other conservative groups to be outraged, but 95,000 comments? This backlash is a little surprising in a world where the top songs and videos are consistently vulgar and network TV shows consistently push the limits.

America is a little schizophrenic
…or they just aren’t paying attention. For years MTV, Fox and CBS (a hodgepodge of cable and broadcast television networks) have all been providing pure garbage on the shows teens love. Sure, the f-words have been bleeped and the nudity blurred… but garbage nonetheless.

Then America will have a little relapse, or “reality check.” Beyonce will do her normal thing on a SuperBowl halftime show and people become outraged.

Why?

They have their head in a box. Beyonce just did the exact same thing she always does for their children in private (on YouTube, in their rooms, via their mobile devices)… but this time in front of 50 million Americans gathered around the TV with grandma sitting right there! Awkward.

Perhaps American parents should tune in to the music that kids are really pumping in their ears and the TV shows kids are really watching and see if that generates any comments…

Or does America really care?

  1. Hey, don’t knock GAME OF THRONES. Great show. A show clearly for adults. Also, I think Breaking Bad(another great show) has had instances of frontal nudity even before the FCC lost a court battle a few years ago. And no, nobody really cares. I think it’s because in truth nothing has really changed. If Hitchcock was still alive I’m sure “Hitchcock Presents” would be on HBO and have a great deal of nudity. Still even though some more cursing and nudity may show up in small doses now, I’m pretty sure the babies are safe from seeing nudity in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  2. I think it’s sad that the FCC is even considering it. Whatever happend to using your imagination. If two adults are kissing and then go into the bedroom, I’m pretty sure we all know what is about to happen. Just sad. We don’t even watch tv anymore except for Sunday football and the morning news. Just pure filth!

  3. I am becoming more and more fed up with the filth on TV. This will not help.
I will cancel my satellite and do without TV. We will just enjoy our sport live action from the side lines while our children play for school. We do not need to expose ourselves to this worldliness anymore than necessary.
