Montana

Posted on: 08/27/08 3:49 AM | by Jonathan McKee

No… I’m not talking about Hannah Montana…. I’m talking about the state of Montana. I’m heading there today to speak at a fall kickoff for the youth ministry at Grace Bible Church in Miles City.

Funny… this will be my first time traveling to Montana. I’ve been to the majority of the 50 states in the U.S. and quite a few spots in Canada. But somehow, this California boy has never been to Montana yet (maybe because the population of the entire state is smaller than my own city of Sacramento). Regardless, I’m looking forward to the scenery. (My wife Lori told me that I better take pictures!) Just pray that United Airlines can get me there on time today! (flights have been kinda nuts lately)

I know that many youth ministries are doing fall kickoffs right now. I posted a freebie “talk” from my new book 10-Minute Talks on the web site this week, something you can use for your fall kickoffs. (Click Here)

A Little Encouragement from the Field

Posted on: 08/7/08 3:07 PM | by Jonathan McKee

Most of you have seen the little contest we’re having on our website right now. Basically, we asked for feedback about my new book 10-Minute Talks. I’m really excited about this book. It’s a collection of story-driven talks and it comes with the free supplemental CD.

The contest is simple; everyone who submits their two cents gets their name put in a hat- and the name we draw wins the new iPhone 3G. Not too shabby.

I’ve been scanning some of the feedback we’ve been receiving so far- it’s pretty encouraging. Here’s a peek at a few:

I have just recently discovered Jonathan McKee and absolutely love his material!  I received his Ten Minute Talks through a pre-release order and took it to bed to review before I fell asleep!  I couldn’t put the book down!  When I finally did, and turned off the light, my head was swimming with “I could use that here….” and “Man that would really work with this….”  Needless to say, I’m hooked!   Jonathan uses REAL life to help kids make connections!  Getting them to be REAL with themselves and each other, encourages and entices them to get REAL with God!  Thank you for this valuable resources!  -Elise, Glen Allen, VA

A great must read, and must have for all of those devotional times for opening in events, pool parties, and other quick message times that all youth ministers have plenty of.  -Mark, Fort Worth, TX

I love and enjoy all the resources you provide, and this book is no different. I am learning that teaching through a good story is the best way to reach teenagers (adults too), and your book is full of powerful stories. I have used 2 of these talks already and the stories really grabs and holds my students attention and gets them thinking about the topic before they even realize they’re thinking about it; then when the scripture is read they are like “oh yeah… I get it.” The CD that is included in the book is amazing, because this allows me to adapt the talks to the way we do our Sunday morning program.  -Jeff, Chesapeake, VA

Here’s more about the contest if you’re interested: http://www.thesource4ym.com/iphonecontest/ … and more about the book here, including some feedback about it from a few names you’ll recognize.

The Ex

Posted on: 08/4/08 8:36 AM | by Jonathan McKee

My wife was looking through a newspaper clothing ad (I can’t remember what store) the other day and started looking really closeley at one of their male models. Then she said, “Oh my gosh… that was my boyfriend in high school!”

I don’t know about you, but I don’t get caught up in the whole jealousy thang. Past is past. But I did find it pretty funny who this guy is. Lori dated him her senior year. He was a model back then too. We looked him up… he’s got a huge portfolio… many of them boasting his huge “300esque” abs. He seems to be doing pretty well for himself.

My kids were all curious to see the pictures of this guy. And, of course, my 10 year old asked the question: “What if Mommy would have married this guy?”

Which, of course, was quickly answered with, “Then you wouldn’t be here!”

But my son added, “Or I’d have really ripped abs!”

Nice.

Later, I couldn’t help myself. I grabbed one of my fat pictures from a few years ago at the beach (my wife and I recently both started a more vigorous working out plan and eating healthy… I lost 25 pounds… still working on it… sigh. But I have plenty of old “fat pictures” floating around) and made my own version of one of his magazine covers.  🙂

Somehow… they weren’t impressed. 🙂

David’s Car Wreck Yesterday

Posted on: 07/23/08 9:03 AM | by Jonathan McKee

Many of you who are loyal THE SOURCE users are getting to know our writer and speaker David R. Smith. David develops and manages much of our content you see at THE SOURCE, and most weeks he writes our Youth Culture Window article that appears in the big magnifying glass on our front page.

Yesterday David got into a car accident- he’s fine- the accident wasn’t really that bad. But it was amazing to hear how God revealed Himself through it. Here’s the email he sent out to his friends and prayer supporters yesterday:

I told you I would email you when “big things” happen in the life of the Smith family. I think today qualifies!

It started when Jenn (wife) asked Josiah (2 year old son) and me to go grocery shopping. He likes to help…mainly because he gets a free cookie while Daddy does all the work! But on this day, we never made it to the grocery store.

A woman swerved into our lane and spiked the brakes at an intersection because she missed her turn, and we rammed straight into her. We hit her so hard, my glasses literally flew off of my face and landed in the passenger floorboard. I was wearing my seatbelt and so the only “injury” I sustained was a slightly aching arm. Josiah was in his car seat in the back, but was given a pretty solid snap at impact. He began to cry immediately (from the pain or the shock or both…I don’t know). I popped out of the car, grabbed him and went running to the car stalled ahead of us in the intersection.

Leah and her 7 year old son Nathan were both OK. Now I could further inspect Josiah. No bruises, no cuts. But he did want to lean his head on my shoulder and cry a bit. That was fine with me.

Problem one, safety, taken care of.

But we still have to call the police to file a report. Leah did not have a cell phone, and mine had ran out of battery. So, God sent John to us. He pulled up, rolled down his window, and asked if we needed help. I said, “We sure could use a cell phone.” While the light was red, he jumped out of his truck, ran it over to me, and then scurried back through the lanes of traffic to his truck. He then pulled into the median and let Josiah and Nathan sit in his truck with the AC going. (It had to be 95 degrees today!!) Leah used his cell phone to call her husband, and I used it to call Jenn…and a bodyguard! J After all, it was HER car I wrecked!

John told me that he was en route to lunch with his pastor. Here’s this kid (maybe 22 years old, maybe!) on his way to get help with his needs, when he stopped to meet so many of ours. After the cops showed up, and we moved my car out of the road and into the median, the boys jumped into my car to stay cool, and John left.

Don’t you love it when the church is the church!?!?

Problem two, call for help, taken care of.

So, Jenn gets there and takes Josiah with her. I stay with the car, not knowing who to send it to for repairs…actually, not even knowing if it’s repairable! Gary, the tow truck guy, could see I was a bit shaken, and he assured me he would put me in contact with his boss (a mechanic), and I would be “taken care of.” Well, no offense to any mechanics reading this, but sometimes they have a bit of a reputation….

So, 2 hours and 1 torrential downpour later, I handed Gary’s boss, Mr. Lee my business card. He said, “Oh you’re a youth pastor?” I answered, “Sort of.” J He then proceeded to tell me that he was the lead deacon at the Korean Presbyterian church in Tampa. This guy owns two collision centers, it’s raining, people are literally waiting in the lobby, and he says to me, “Grab your things; I will give you a ride to your house.” I told him I lived all the way over by the university, to which he answered, “No problem.” The guy WOULD NOT take no for an answer.

So, during our ride, we talked about how he had become a Christian, moved to America, and started his business. He assured me he would take great care of my car…and my finances, too!

Don’t you love it when the church is the church!?!?!

Problem three, money/repairs/car rentals, (mostly) taken care of.

OK, so it’s now 1:00am. The insurance company has been called, and a new car has been rented. I’ve prayed with my family more today than I ever have. (Which totally freaks Jo out…he usually only prays when it’s time to eat. J So every time we go to pray, he’s looking around for food! J) When I wasn’t on the phone with insurance companies, or car rental agencies, I was just thanking God for His abundant love for my family. I’ve now had a few hours to reflect on the day, and I’ve entered this day into the journal that I am keeping for Josiah. In it, I told Josiah that it wasn’t seatbelts or airbags or “crumple design technology” that kept us safe today; it was the mighty and loving hand of God.

I am sending this to each of you because it’s part of our lives, and you said you wanted to be kept informed. We both know that I cannot thank you enough for your support of our ministry, and your prayers for my family. I am certain an emailed thank you falls short of my appreciation in the Lord for you, but I send it nevertheless. Thank you.

Keep David in prayer. He’s waiting on the insurance to find out if his car is totalled… you know how that goes.

The Dark Knight

Posted on: 07/21/08 2:18 PM | by Jonathan McKee

Okay… I took the family to see the new Batman film, The Dark Knight (the first Batman film to not have the word “Batman” in the title), this weekend… and wow! Best summer film so far, period.

Let me be the first to warn you… NOT a kids’ film. The film was totally clean, but it was violent, eerie, and… well… “dark” (hence the title).

Heath Ledger’s Joker was amazing. The rumors are true… he really was that good. The Oscar buzz is no hype. I really hope they award him (or… his family… his memory) in some way.

As a fan of the 1989 Tim Burton Batman with Jack Nicholson as Joker, I went into this film skeptical that Ledger’s Joker was going to be that much better. I was blown away. I won’t talk about it here, because in our review of the film, I comment about this and Todd verbalizes my feelings to a tee.

IMDB (The Internet Movie Database) provides Michael Caine’s two cents about the role:

It’s Sir Michael Caine‘s opinion that Heath Ledger beat the odds and topped Jack Nicholsons Joker from Batman (1989): “Jack was like a clown figure, benign but wicked, maybe a killer old uncle. He could be funny and make you laugh. Heath’s gone in a completely different direction to Jack, he’s like a really scary psychopath. He’s a lovely guy and his Joker is going to be a hell of a revelation in this picture.” Caine bases this belief on a scene where the Joker pays a visit to Wayne Manor. He’d never met Ledger before, so when Ledger arrived and performed he gave Caine such a fright he forgot his lines.

IMDB also provided this tidbit:

When asked, “Why Heath Ledger as the Joker?” Christopher Nolan said, “Because he’s fearless.”

If you’re looking for a movie to see this summer, get a sitter for any kids under 12, pack the rest in the car and GO see this film!

You can read my entire review of the film here.

Surfing in NJ

Posted on: 07/8/08 11:58 AM | by Jonathan McKee

As most of you know, I’m on the East Coast speaking at a camp at the NJ shore. When we arrived at the camp and were at the front desk checking in, a surf instructor walked by to check who had signed up for free lessons (provided for the kids at the camp). Only two kids had signed up, so he asked my son Alec if he would like to try it. Alec hesitated for a second.

That same morning Alec had been bugging me about wanting to surf. So when the instructor asked him… I looked at him and said, “Don’t hesitate… now’s your chance!”

So 10 minutes later Alec’s on the water taking lessons, and 45 minutes after that he’s catching waves (small waves… but still waves nonetheless) on the Atlantic.

Pretty cool! (Some of you remember me blogging about Lori and I taking lessons last December)

When he came in it was nothing but, “Dad! I’ve gotta get a surf board! I love it! I totally want to live where I could surf all the time…”

🙂

Six States in One Day

Posted on: 07/5/08 9:09 AM | by Jonathan McKee

Tomorrow my family and I fly to the East Coast where I’ll be speaking at a camp all next week. If our flight goes through (don’t even get me started about the reliability of the airlines lately!!!), we’ll be arriving in VA tomorrow afternoon, then hitting D.C., Maryland… the edge of Delaware, and finally New Jersey within 24 hours (and that’s including a night’s sleep).

In California if I drove that long I would just run into… more California. So it’s always a fun experience for my kids. “Hey kids, we’re hitting a new state!”

“Huh? I thought we just arrived in a new state 10 minutes ago!”

“We did. But now we’re entering another one. Did you enjoy Delaware?”

Once the flight is done (grumble…), I’m really looking forward to this trip. I speak a week at Long Beach island in NJ. The camp is on a huge strip of land that parallel’s the shore. Beach on both sides… the kids are pretty excited.

If you think of it, pray for the week. I speak a couple times a day most of the week. I present the Gospel and do an invitation on Tuesday night (you can really pray for that), and then I teach about making Jesus a priority for the rest of the week.

When I finish up Saturday we are heading to Philly for a day to visit family, then onto the D.C. area to visit some friends. We’ll probably spend a day in the D.C. “Mall”… the monuments, museums, etc. We haven’t seen the new WWII memorial so we’ll probably go check that out.

It will be good fun having the family with me again on this trip.

Good times!

300 jr. highers

Posted on: 06/22/08 11:29 AM | by Jonathan McKee

My family just got back from a weeklong camp where I spoke to about 300 jr. highers. The week was fantastic. The kids really responded to the messages, with about 40 kids making first time decisions to follow Christ that week, and even more making commitments to purge habits or temptations from their life and recommit to live for Him. The week also provided my family with some great “down” time between talks. We hiked, kayak, watched almost the whole Lord of the Rings Trilogy (yeah… that takes a while) … we just enjoyed some good time of “chilling.” I really enjoy the every once in a while that I get to bring my family on these trips.

Pray specifically for two kids from this camp… I’ll call them “Brian” and “Andrew.” They stopped by our family’s cabin one night at the camp to just thank me for what I shared. Both have been getting into some trouble at home, smoking a lot of weed and looking for answers. They said that this week provided those answers. They want to go back and live differently. We talked about how they could do that.

Please pray for these two kids. According to brand new Center for Disease Control “Youth Risk Behavior” report, 49.1% of today’s students have tried marijuana by the time they graduate from high school, and 25% of them are current users (have used in the last 30 days). Not all kids smoke weed. But kids are looking for answers in all the wrong places. I love the opportunity to be able to point kids like  “Brian” and “Andrew” toward answers that fulfill.

God is good!

Golfing for… you

Posted on: 06/10/08 12:02 PM | by Jonathan McKee

Yesterday I went golfing for you.

Seriously… I did. Every year we have one large fund raiser that helps us raise funds to keep the resources free for youth workers on our web site. This fund raiser is a golf marathon… three rounds of golf in one day. Golfers raise $1,000 each to play. We raised a bunch of money for our ministry… and boy did we have blast.

I’m not much of a golfer. This was only my second time playing this year. I have never broken 100 (for those of you that don’t golf, breaking 100 is a huge deal for golfers. It seperates the men from the boys. It’s when your score is under 100… on a typical par 72 course that means you have to average less then “two shots over par,” also known as double bogey, each hole. I am a double bogey golfer which means I usually shoot about a 108).

Yesterday on one of the rounds I shot a 50 on the front 9. Yes, that means that I could taste “breaking 100.” Unfortunately I fell apart on the back nine and shot a 59!

Yes… my legacy as a double bogey golfer lives on!

Recruiting & Training Volunteers

Posted on: 04/9/08 10:38 AM | by Jonathan McKee

Today’s blog will be short as I’m finishing up my last touches on a workshop I’m teaching In Sacramento tomorrow where I’m training volunteer managers how to recruit and manage volunteers. I’m focusing a good chunk of the workshop on understanding GENERATION Y but I’ll also be teaching them how to recruit 21st Century volunteers and keep them once you’ve got em!’

This workshop is fun to prepare. It’s called THE NEW BREED, based off the book of the same title that my dad and I wrote together.

I love training. Nothing excites me more than equipping a group of people to go make a difference. It doesn’t get better than that.

My dad offers a ton of free resources and idea for managing and equipping today’s volunteer on his website: www.VolunteerPower.com
