Canadian Parents Forced to Talk about Sex

Ontario just updated their sex education curriculum for the first time in 17 years, and parents across the country are a little upset with some of the content. Students will learn about masturbation, oral sex, anal sex (hold on to your hats… I’ll be writing about this taboo subject in our next Parenting Help article), and gender identity theory. In fact, students will be learning six gender identities instead of just two.

Last week I flew to Toronto for a timely interview about my new book More Than Just the Talk on the Canadian TV show 100 Huntley Street (airing late March). This new book asserts “parents need to create a comfortable climate of continual conversations about sex” … a sore subject for Canadian parents right now, who feel their hand is being forced by this new curriculum.

The interview was intriguing. I can’t say I disagreed with their frustration with “Big Brother” stepping in and saying, “We’re going to teach your kids about sex because you don’t!”

But it really raises the question: How come so many parents “don’t”?

Conservative groups are also frustrated because Kathleen Wynne, the Ontario Premier who pushed this curriculum through, is openly gay and seems to be pushing that agenda. She is labeling opposition to the curriculum “homophobic.”

So parents have to make a decision. Are they going to let teachers teach their children about sex, gay sex and gender identity?

After my interview I took part in a panel on the subject with the host and two moms (also airing in late March). I loved the response from the two Canadian mothers.

“We’re just going to make sure this is something we talk about in the home.”

When they asked my opinion on the subject, I quoted my Canadian friend Marv Penner. “Don’t mistake knowledge about biology as knowledge about morality.” We need to teach more than just body parts and STDs. We need to teach about a loving God who gave us this amazing gift of sex to enjoy in the context of marriage.

Canadian parents are excited about my release of Sex Matters, releasing on Amazon.CA this next week, because the discussion questions at the end of each chapter make it the perfect tool to open up the doors of dialogue about this subject with their kids… telling them the rest of the story.

Parents need to have these conversations, or, as Canadian parents are discovering, their kids are just going to find out somewhere else.
