The day was taking a severe turn for the worse… how could this possibly turn out well? But 2 hours later I was experiencing manna from Heaven. (My Twitter followers know what I’m talking about—they heard me chiming in about it last night.)
I’m writing this post from a Chicago hotel room. That’s not good, because I’m supposed to be home right now.
It started at speaking trip in Detroit this weekend. I had a great time teaching my Connect workshop to a network of Detroit area youth workers on Saturday, then preached Sunday, then taught my Parenting the Texting Generation workshop Sunday afternoon. The people were great… but I started feeling under the weather as the weekend progressed… not much I could do, so I just slept plenty and kept at it. Needless to say, I was pretty excited about flying home Sunday night.
After my final workshop, I got to the airport, checked in, arrived at my gate, and when it was time to board… we waited…and waited. That’s when I knew something was wrong. Then we heard the announcement you never want to hear. “Flight cancelled!”
Then it’s always quick decision time. Call? Or stand in line? I called and after an hour of “Can’t you please find something out of here tonight?” and every scenario imaginable, they finally found a solution. They’d fly me to Chicago tonight, then on home tomorrow morning.
Not happy!
When I landed in Chicago it was off to another customer service line to get a hotel voucher from the airline (which took way too long- because the guy didn’t understand what happened and I had to explain it to him in way too much detail), but eventually he gave me a voucher to an airport hotel I know well… and then it dawned on me. This hotel is right next to a Giordano’s Pizza!
If you’ve followed my blog for long, you know that on of my favorite restaurants in the entire globe is Giordano’s Pizza.
I’ll cut to the chase. At 10:30PM I’m sitting in a booth at Giordano’s eating their pizza… true manna from heaven.
It had been a tough day… a tiring weekend. It was a serendipitous moment! Thank you, God, for the little things.

I just wanted to say that I attended your workshop this weekend and I really appreciated all that you had to say. We have a 14 year old daughter and an 11 year old son, and your message was a little bit of a wake up call for us to be more aware of the messages the media is presenting to our youth. Thankfully, we always have co-watched tv as a family, and we only have dumb phones. However, my husband and I really only listen to music already on our i-pods…so we had no idea about popular music lyrics of so-called “clean” songs.
One funny story, as soon as the church service had ended, my daughter rushed up to me and said in a panic “Am I still allowed to go to the homecoming dance?” We had a great afternoon discussion with our daughter.
I’m sure you won’t be surprised that our son kept quoting “Just Do It!” in the same voice you used as God’s instruction for Adam and Eve. Another great conversation ensued with our son about waiting for marriage.
Thank you for all you do and may God continue to bless you and your family.
Thanks Darcy. I had a great time hanging out with your church for the weekend… and I’m especially glad that you were able to dialogue with your daughter about the homecoming dance. (My daughters, 15 and 17, are both going next weekend. We’ve been having a lot of those conversations around our house lately)
