This week is a big week for film geeks… because this Friday (or Thursday night at midnight for real fans), The Hobbit comes to theaters!

This means fun for you, my blog readers, because I’ve got some great goodies for you, including free The Hobbit movie tickets for a couple of ya. Yes… it’s time for a little contest.

(WINNERS NOW POSTED AT BOTTOM OF POST)

The Contest is Simple:

  1. Use the comment feature below.
  2. List your three favorite movies, in order (not just Lord of the Rings films… your three favorite movies of all time).
  3. List your zipcode (other countries are welcome to participate in the contest for fun, but unfortunately, I only have movie tickets for America).
(BONUS: If you Tweet about the contest, sharing my twitter name and linking this blog post, you’ll double your chances of winning.)

Look forward to three things from me later this week:

  1. I’ll post the winner to this contest by this Friday, December 14th, the release date of The Hobbit (I might contact the winners sooner to get them their tickets in time).
  2. My son Alec, film geek extraordinaire, is screening the film Monday night and writing a review. We’ll post that review as a guest post on my blog Thursday morning (we’re not allowed to post anything prior to Thursday because of an embargo).
  3. I’ll be Tweeting from The Hobbit premiere live on Thursday night at midnight (Pacific time) because I’ll be at the midnight premiere with my family. (Yes, we’re an entire family of nerds!)

May the odds be forever in your favor (whoops… wrong film).

WINNERS: Congrats to three winners, each winning a pair of tickets to The Hobbit premier!!! Thank you all for your awesome comments! I loved it! Here are your winners:

  4. Chris Miller, 93631

    Top Gun
    The Goonies
    A Christmas Story

Gotta love the 80’s! Gonna take my wife on a date to see it. We’re both excited! This will help make it a budget date (I like avoiding the word “cheap”)!

  5. My three faves are:
    1. Rear Window with Grace Kelly and Jimmy Stewart
    2. Giant with Elizabeth Taylor
    3. Clue

I love older movies! Btw, you may remember me because we had dinner together in Albuquerque and you wanted to see Breaking Bad filming sites 🙂 Because if your interest I tried watching the show and only made it through one episode. That show is raw! Enjoy The Hobbit!

    1. Yes, it was fun when we all connected for dinner. I love your favorite films. Gotta love Rear Window! And, yeah, BB is a pretty depressing, yet realistic look at how meth can destroy someone’s life.

  6. Yeah! I am excited about seeing “The Hobbit!” My zipcode is 71655.
What a wonderful “early” Christmas gift this would be. I am blessed to be a youth minister but I live on a tight budget because I don’t make much being a youth minister. I would love to surprise my husband on a date to see this!!! We have been excited about this movie as soon as we knew it was being made.

My 3 “all time” favorite movies (and this was hard…I have many, many favorites):
    1. Charlotte’s Web (the original, 1973 animated version). (friendship, trust, determination)
    2. The Man in the Iron Mask (chivalry & passion & justice)
    3. The Notebook (love & all the sappiness & dedication & passion)

  7. Hard to do 3….

    2. The Empire Strikes Back
    3. The Natural

    Zip Code: 37129
…and I DO plan on seeing “The Hobbit”, but I may be one of the few in America if not the universe who have not seen any of “The Lord of the Rings” films.

I’m one of those who has to read the books before I see the movies and while I HAVE read “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring” I have not read the others. One day.

  9. Excited about the Hobbit for sure. Favorite three movies:

    Shawshank Redemption
    12 Angry Men (the original)
    Apollo 13
Honorable mention: The Avengers, Rudy, Miracle, The Replacements, and Xanadu

    86315

  10. 1. Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi (I like the whole series, but this is my favorite)
    2. McLintock! (I like ALL of John Wayne’s western movies!)

    Zip: 24592

  11. Zip code – 92203

    In no specific order –
    The Natural
    The Man From Snowy River
    Field of Dreams

And if I could list my top ten it would include another baseball movie – Bull Durham – what’s up with that, you ask? I have no idea.

    1. Ha. Another interesting combination. What if you inter-edited these films?

“So what I told you was true… from a certain point of view.”

“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball!”

      “At my signal, unleash hell.”

  12. My favorite three movies of all time (in no particular order):
    The Dark Knight
    Inception
    The Prestige
(I’m a little partial to Christopher Nolan)

Runner(s) Up: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the LOTR Trilogy, Memento, THX-1138

    Zip Code: 14020

      1. Does my (nearly) 3 year old Elijah get a vote?

His three favorites (in no particular order) are:
        Horton Hears a Who
        Meet the Robinsons
Batman the Movie, 1966 (Although he was a little disappointed with Lee Merriweather as Catwoman. He’s a little partial to Julie Newmar.)

Runner(s) Up: Finding Nemo, Madagascar 3, Toy Story 2, Winnie the Pooh, and the League of Incredible Vegetables!

(He’s really disappointed about the whole Twitter thing… Waiting ten more years to open an account is a real test of his patience!)

  13. Soooo looking forward to 12:01am when it comes out!!

    1. LOTR – love it!!
    2. Bat Man – The Datk Night
    3. Pirates of Caribean – all 3
And if the ABC series LOST was a movie, it would b on this list!!!

  14. 3) Boondock Saints

    1) Napoleon Dynamite – I could watch this 1,000 times

    2. Empire Strikes Back (Yoda is totaly the Gandolf of the foce)
    3. The Three Amigos (Steve Martin, Martin Short, Chevy Chase; it never gets old)

  16. Nice contest, Jonathan!

    2) Batman Begins (yes, I like it better than The Dark Knight)
    3) Gladiator

    87112

It’s so funny that my wife posted up above… She’s quicker than I am!

  17. 1- The Shawshank Redemption
    2- LOTR Trilogy
    3- Tombstone

Dying to see the Hobbit. My favorite fiction book ever. I just finished reading it for the 6th time in prep for the movie I’ve waited for ever since I first read the Hobbit 20 years ago.

  18. 92691

    Getting to 3 is tough….

Snow White (original)-Paul took me to a special screening at he Dusney studio for our first date almost 30 years ago, so a must on my list!

Shadowlands (with Anthony Hopkins) – got to live C.S. Lewis

Pirates of the Caribbean – have a crush on Capt Jack Sparrow

Pick me!!! Pick me!!! Pick me!!!

  19. 1. The Lord of the Rings ( The Two Towers, if it has to be one)
    2. Unbreakable
    3. The Italian Job (the newer one)
Now I want to go watch all of these!
    98926

  20. 3. The Princess Bride

    2. The Matrix (the first one – best one in the series by far)

    1. The Lord of the Rings

I consider the LOTR trilogy one long movie for the purpose of the contest. If I had to choose my favorite of the 3 I would put Fellowship at #1, Return of the King at #2 & The Two Towers at #3 (though the Battle of Helm’s Deep may have been my favorite scene in all 3 of the movies.)

    Honorable mention to:
“Excalibur” (an epic fanatasy movie from 1981 with lesser roles played by Patrick Stewart (played Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek The Next Generation) and Lliam Neeson before the two went on to become A list actors.
“Highlander” (1986 flick starring Christopher Lambert & Sean Connery)

  21. Sorry, I forgot to leave my zip code.
    Movies:
    Sound of music
    Shrek
    The fourth wiseman
    Zip Code: 27517

    1. Oooooo…. if my wife was judging this, then you would probably win just for mentioning While You Were Sleeping… truly her favorite. (or Big Mammas House… yeah… don’t ask.)

  22. 1. Jaws
    2. A Bronx Tale
    3. Signs

Ok, I admit I am sucking up to the judge. Man, I totally think I know your movie tastes better than I know my wife’s. creepy…. But impressive huh? Btw Jon you need to roll up the hose in your back yard. Just kidding. But there is a fine line between avid follower and stalker.

    Three seven zero one five
That’s the 615 area code, Yo. Just trying to stand out.

    1. Ha… but if you were really gonna name my top 3, it would have to be Jaws, A Bronx Tale, Heat and Shawshank (yeah, that’s four). And I love Signs too. Oh… and I own a shotgun John. I’m known to shoot stalkers without provocation. 🙂

  23. The Outsiders
The Karate Kid (the “Get him a body bag!” version)
    Back to the Future

    33543

    Thank you!

    2. The Princess Bride
    3. How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying

    79347

      1. It’s just such an amazingly unbelievable concept. Tim Robbins, is great! I haven’t seen it in years, but I think about it often! Weird.

  25. My favorite movies:
    1. Kung Fu Panda 1
    2. Madagascar 3
    3. Avatar the Last Airbender
    Zipcode: 27517

    1. LOTR
    2. The Dark Knight
    3. The Matrix

others that should make the list…
National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Tombstone, The Shawshank Redemption, A Christmas Story, Band of Brothers (not really a movie I know…) and A Few Good Men.

    50226

    Thanks!

  27. 1. Skyfall – James Bond
    2. Goldfinger – James Bond
    3. Casino Royale – James Bond.

    Ooops: Zip: 94104

      1. Mega Nerd! Fire fly for sure but I thought the movie was just as good! But if we’re talking TV shows Big Bang Theory. Hands down (sorry Joe Vivian told me to answer this wrong.)

  28. #1 Courageous

    #2 Pursuit of Happiness

    #3 Hoosiers

My brother was just telling me a couple of weeks ago he would like to see the Hobbit together, so this would be awesome to win. Great idea Jonathan!

    Zip Code: 53950

  29. Wow. This is TOUGH.

1 — Gone with the Wind (NO LAUGHING)
    2 — Inception
    3 — 4 way tie: LOTR (all)/Harry Potter (all)/Shawshank Redemption/Memento

    95969

  30. 1. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
    2. Back to the Future (part 1)
    3. LOTR: Return of the King

    Zip: 27358

  31. Driving Miss Daisy
    Beaches
    Fried Green Tomatoes

    umm… not really.

    Braveheart
    Saving Private Ryan
    The Shawshank Redemption

    ahhh… that’s much better!
    Zip: 34654

    1. Ha…. that’s hilarious. When I first read your list, I looked over at your name again to see if you were a female. Funny thing… Driving Miss Daisy and Beaches are both really good films. I really liked them both. But yes, I prefer the second list. 🙂

  32. My whole family (even my non-geeky wife) are looking forward to the Hobbit. My oldest is really wanting to go to his first midnight opening.

Coming up with favorites of all time is extremely difficult, because it depends on the season and my memory. However…

    1) LOTR
    2) Emperor’s Club
    3) Dead Poet’s Society

Honorable mention definitely needs to go to White Christmas. Like I said, the season…

    Zip Code: 98837

    Thanks for the contest.

    1. Gabbie… I’ll be honest with you. There is no way you’re gonna win this contest with the Twilight Saga on your list. 🙂 (although, maybe your inclusion of Gladiator redeems you)

  33. Zip code – 28412

Pride & Prejudice – (Colin Firth version)
    Anne of Green Gables
    Facing the Giants

    1. I love Anne of Green Gables! My daughter just got it for her birthday and can’t stop watching it 🙂

      1. Okay, so my wife was watching this years ago and I was walking by. I sat down and started watching it with her… I immediately was drawn in. I know I’ll lose man points… but that’s a great series.

  34. 1. Jurassic Park
    2. Star Wars (ep 4)
    3. Master and Commander
http://Www.flickchart.com helped me with the list. Always loved Dinosaurs and even as a Youth Pastor JP hasn’t fallen from my top spot. Allows me to start the God created Dinosaurs conversation.
    Zip code 28328

  35. 1. Princess Bride
    2. Rope (and many other James Stewart movies)
    3. A Christmas Story (and not just because it’s Christmas time, that movie is awesome)
    95842

Like everyone else, I am completely freakin’ out about The Hobbit! They had been talking about making it for so many years that I can’t believe it’s finally coming out!

    1. Rope is 1 shot. The entire film… 1 shot. Amazing. (yes, film reals don’t go that long so they had to end a roll in a dark spot and start a new one… so technically it was multiple shots. But were it not for the limitation of the roll of film… 1 shot).

  36. Grateful for your blog, thanks Jonathan.
Hard to keep it to three but here goes…
    1. Princess Bride
    2. It’s a Wonderful Life
    3. The Blind Side

    Live in 98053

      1. How could I have forgotten the Dream Team? I learned everything I ever needed to know about Ping Pong from Kenny. 🙂

  37. 1) The Godfather (parts 1 and 2…. part 3 doesn’t exist)
    2) Oceans 11
    3) Bull Durham

    49519

    1. Ha… you’re not alone with Godfather 3. It was hit and miss. I loved Michael’s quest for redemption. I also LOVED Andy Garcia as Sonny’s boy. Sofia Coppola… we all could have done without.

      1. I have a theory that if Godfather 3 was titled something other then Godfather then it would have been a better movie… the awesomeness of the first two make the third look worse then it really is.

Its like comparing an awesome bar burger to McDonalds… McDonalds is not bad by any means but no where near as awesome as the bar burger.

  38. Pearl Harbor
    Dances with Wolves
The Horse Whisperer (and not for the usual reasons you might think…its a wonderful portrayal of what it means to be broken, to surrender, and then to submit appropriately with trust & love)

Honorable mentions: Rudy, all the Star Wars movies, Armageddon, Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music, the Patriot…oh, the list goes on and on!

    30512

  39. 1. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Kevin Costner/Alan Rickman version)
    2. March of the Wooden Soldiers (…really anything with Laurel & Hardy)
    3. Quigley Down Under

(just picking 3 is INCREDIBLY hard to do!)

  40. 1. It’s a Wonderful Life
    2. The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings Trilogy)
    3. Star Wars

    33411

  41. Here goes…

3 – Fast Times at Ridgemont High (You know you’re a youth worker when…….:) )
    Zip: 47909

  44. “sneaky little hobbitses…”

    My top 3 –
    1. Memento – Love the backwards memory twisting!
    2. Couragous – So well-done and speaking directly to guys-guys,
    3. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn – Spielberg & Jackson (can’t miss!) The story: Fun, if a little fantastic – the animation: STUNNING!!

  45. Hard to rank them in order, but three favorites are:
    1. LOTR Trilogy, esp. parts 1 & 3 (LOTR also happens to be my favorite book, outside of the Bible)
    2. Despicable Me
    3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey version)

    Zip: 27030

  46. #1 Star Wars: A New Hope

  47. 3. Tommy Boy
    2. So I Married An Axe Murderer
    1. Houseguest (with Sinbad and Phil Hartman)

Runners up: The Sandlot, Elf, Arsenic & Old Lace, and most of the movies everyone else has listed!!

    76710

    1. Saving Private Ryan
    2. Forrest Gump
    3. Shawshank Redemption

and as a runner up…given the time of year:

    4. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation!!

“Hey Eddie, can I refill your eggnog for you? Get you something to eat? Drive you out to the middle of nowhere and leave you for dead?”

  50. Jesse 44907 Ohio
    1. 300
    2. Zoolander
    3. Robin Hood Men in tights (Mel Brooks version of Robin Hood)

  51. 1. LOTR Return of the King
    2. LOTR Fellowship of the Ring
    3. Les Miserables (Liam Neeson/ Geoffrey Rush version)

  52. This is actually date night material for us (win or lose this contest). Here are the top 3 movies in my little world (52302 area code):

    1. A Christmas Story
    2. Lord of the Rings trilogy
    3. Star Wars or Mr. Holland’s Opus (tough choice – totally different movies)

    Thanks.

    1. I’m taking all of my volunteer staff out to see The Hobbit on Friday night! (not quite as much of a nerd as you)

    2. Hmmmmm. Contact. Zemeckis is so hit and miss. Back to the Future was great. The sequels… not so great. Forest Gump, amazing. Contact? Just so so. (but that’s just my humble opinion) I think I even liked his “What Lies Beneath” better than Contact.

  53. Zip 23832

    1. The Sound of Music (traditional Thanksgiving Family movie)
    2. With Honors
    3. Home Alone 2

  54. To narrow down to 3 top movies is practically impossible. We own 900 DVD’s and have seen countless more.

Even though a few of my top movies might disqualify me, I will give you a few of my favorites:
    Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
    Corky Romano
    Dirty Dancing
Grease (and yes, I did like Xanadu too but just because of the music, the acting was not good)
    The Lake House
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe
    Les Miserables’

    My zip is 61951

  55. I love so many, but here are the ones I’ve watched most often (no particular order):

    1. Good Will Hunting
    2. When Harry Met Sally
    3. Firefly

  56. Oops again! I think of Firefly/Serenity like one big story – sometimes forget which is the movie/TV show, but it’s kind of like those who think LOTR counts as one movie. I try to watch a Big Bang Theory episode every night or 2, because nothing makes me laugh so consistently!!

  57. Zip 53406

    Zip 53406

    1. Night of the Living Dead (The original in black and white…I’ve never been so terrified or closer to believing I was moments away from meeting Jesus in my life.) Imagine two horrified 13 year olds standing outside, on a dark, empty street, in front of a now closed, dark, empty store front theater in the little town of no-where North Dakota at 1:30 in the morning.

True story…. was the short, round-ish, boy who had to run (with his much faster and sleeker friend Richie) down a dark, stinky alley, dodging trash cans and homeless, rail-boxcar riders when my Dad failed to pick us up after the midnight showing of Night of the Living Dead.
Richie and I picked up the pace of our journey very very shortly after we stepped into the dark alley and immediately after my initial scream that sounded like someone had just jumped up and down on some poor cats’ tail. Seriously, one deep breath and we were off through the alley, across a dark, drive up bank parking lot; over a railroad track viaduct; another parking lot, more railroad tracks and small railroad side yard. Then we sprinted passed the cop shop with those freaky orange sodium vapor lights that make everyone look undead…even Richie. I know Richie was still alive because he hadn’t been bitten…yet. Still, he looked just like all the recently released, late night, (undead) bar brawlers stumbling around the front steps of the police station. Running and taking my second deep breath, after the first half of what seemed like eternity, I was gearing up for the next block when Richie suddenly screamed like my little sister. I don’t know what he said or came out of his mouth, but I ran faster. I was passed the side garage, between hearse #1 and hearse #2, and at the top of four steps that my feet never touched when I bounced off the front entrance of the city morgue. Pausing a moment to get the full effect of my new concussion, I leaned against the bloody (OK it was just sweaty) morgue door where I could hear the ragged, gasping breath of the undead inside the morgue clambering to get me and Richie.

As soon as the stars in my head were less bright than the ones in the sky, I took the third deep breath of the evening and bounded, as sure footed as any gazelle with a broken leg, across the lawn of Trinity Mission and Emergency Shelter using a very creative zigzag sort of pattern. My recently concussed, oxygen deprived brain ‘knew’ a zigzag pattern would help me avoid the thousands of undead, rail riding boxcar jumpers who had stepped outside to enjoy an undead smoke before the 2:00a.m. Mission curfew required the doors to be locked. I was absolutely certain all one million undead rail riding friends of Boxcar Willie were going to bite us and make us one of the living dead.

It was at this point in my life, on the front lawn of Trinity Mission, where I was converted. I became convinced….that salad eaters run faster and don’t taste as good to the undead as meat eaters. Right then and there, I vowed to eat only salad – no dressing – just dry lettuce…with maybe a little fat free dressing – for the rest of my life.

Having been Vegatized, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I thought is was Jesus coming to greet me since he and I were getting mighty close given all the prayer that had been happening very recently in my life. Bursting into Heaven, which looks remarkably like a Seven -11, I realized it was not Jesus but a construction foreman turned undead shopper standing over the corpse of my recently undead friend Richie. Poor Richie…how awful to come to be bitten and made one of the undead only to fall onto his final, eternal resting place on newly laundered, red, Seven -11 door mat. Ooooh to be within an arms length of the work boots of undead, construction worker, Jesus, while he filled a gallon sized cup from the only Slurpee machine on this side of the pearly gates which was securely bolted down onto the golden streets of…

I had no choice but to leave Richie lying on the red carpet next to undead, work boot wearing, construction worker, Slurpee drinking, Jesus. I had to get out of there, I had to prove I was alive so I lurched towards the counter while gasping for air and clutching my chest as a form of sign language to let the living know it was my heart making all the racket. Being assured my heart was about to explode, I politely handed the wide eyed, undead, store clerk #2 a sweaty quarter and croaked that I needed change to use the phone.

Richie, being my best and only undead friend, chose to stay inside crying while trying repeatedly to stand upright on the red carpet of Seven-11 Heaven in order to come to grips with his new life as one of The Living Dead.

Finally upright, Richie was again overcome by his new undead lifestyle and began to weep. It was when he chose to remain in Seven -11 Heaven, on the red carpet, in front of the doors to practice his undead sway and moan that I realized the friendship between the living and the undead would be short lived. As was deciding how to get out the doors with him standing there swaying, moaning, and weeping, the final bits of his humanity were thrown up and out of him. For an undead guy Richie’s aim was still pretty good. He got some of his humanity in the trash can, but much of it splattered against the glass doors. There was humanity everywhere!

Using the door on the left to step outside, I reflected that life was strange. I didn’t remember buying Red Hots at the theater, but apparently Richie made a purchase and hadn’t bothered to share with me, his only living friend. I left Richie gripping the door handle, swooning on the red, Seven -11 Heaven floor mat while his new friends Mr. Undead, Work boot Wearing, Construction Worker, Slurpee Drinking Jesus and Mr. Undead Seven-11 clerk #1 were talking to him and slapping him on the back to congratulate him on making the transition to become completely undead.

Given the fact I could no longer breathe because my lungs had fallen out somewhere along the way, I shambled as fast as I could across the dark parking lot to the Seven-11 Heaven pay-phone on a stick with a useless silver, gum encrusted, wind shield. Continuing my reflection, I realized this whole journey to the pay phone would not have been necessary had my Dad not become one of the undead while Richie and I were at the midnight showing of “Night of the Living Dead” in Nowhere, North Dakota.

Richie’s and my RETURN TRIP to the theater would not have been necessary either had I remembered to tell my Dad where we were AFTER he apologized again and again and again for falling asleep which was AFTER he answered the phone and grunted something about late night idiots calling people in the middle of the night to wake him up. My Dad’s conversation with me happened just BEFORE he left the house to pick us up…at least that was what my undead sounding Mom said when I called the house the second time.

I waved to undead Richie and pointed towards the theater and certain desolation. Immediately the doors of Seven -11 Heaven were flung open by Undead, Work boot Wearing, Construction Worker, Slurpee Drinking Jesus and Undead Seven-11 clerk #1 who were hurling my wide eyed, undead best friend into the parking lot. I was amazed…Richie could still run pretty fast for an undead guy.

The experience and friendship…not the movie…is what makes this my favorite movie of all time.

    2. The Emerald Forest. (It was North Dakota…We didn’t have trees or Bat People! Of course I loved this movie.)

    3. The Name of the Rose (Actually any film starring Sean Connery ties for #3 with the exception of that horrible Sean ‘the Dragon’ Connery film. My retirement plan from a very young age has been to grow up and be Sean Connery.)

    1. Chris… I’m not sure I got the picture. Could you please try to include a little more detail in your description. If you just make this comment a little longer, then we’ll all understand. 🙂

Baylee says she misses you and needs you around for guidance. Just Saying…

    1. Ha… Baylee is awesome. I’ve gotta introduce her to my Ashley. The two would get along really well… and probably get into trouble together. Maybe it’s good they live two states apart!!!

  62. 1 The Usual Suspects. Never been a film with a stroy like it and Kevin Spacey was superb in it.
    2 Shawshank.
3 Heat. Al Pacino and Robert De Niro at their best.

    Runner Up. The devils advocate.

Shame the tickets won’t extend to God’s Own Country of Scotland.

  63. One of the funniest films with an honourable mention must be ferris buellers day off. Worst film ever a tie between vanilla sky and what dreams may come.

  64. I intended to compose you that very little remark to be able to thank you yet again on your splendid strategies you’ve featured above. This is wonderfully generous of you to supply openly precisely what a lot of people could have advertised for an e book to make some profit for themselves, specifically seeing that you could possibly have tried it in case you considered necessary. These good ideas likewise acted to provide a great way to know that other people online have the same fervor the same as my personal own to figure out many more when it comes to this condition. I am sure there are lots of more fun sessions ahead for people who read your blog post.
