This week is a big week for film geeks… because this Friday (or Thursday night at midnight for real fans), The Hobbit comes to theaters!

This means fun for you, my blog readers, because I’ve got some great goodies for you, including free The Hobbit movie tickets for a couple of ya. Yes… it’s time for a little contest.

The Contest is Simple:

  2. List your three favorite movies, in order (not just Lord of the Rings films… your three favorite movies of all time).
  3. List your zipcode (other countries are welcome to participate in the contest for fun, but unfortunately, I only have movie tickets for America).

  2. My son Alec, film geek extraordinaire, is screening the film Monday night and writing a review. We’ll post that review as a guest post on my blog Thursday morning (we’re not allowed to post anything prior to Thursday because of an embargo).

    I consider the LOTR trilogy one long movie for the purpose of the contest. If I had to choose my favorite of the 3 I would put Fellowship at #1, Return of the King at #2 & The Two Towers at #3 (though the Battle of Helm’s Deep may have been my favorite scene in all 3 of the movies.)

      1. I have a theory that if Godfather 3 was titled something other then Godfather then it would have been a better movie… the awesomeness of the first two make the third look worse then it really is.

    1. Night of the Living Dead (The original in black and white…I’ve never been so terrified or closer to believing I was moments away from meeting Jesus in my life.) Imagine two horrified 13 year olds standing outside, on a dark, empty street, in front of a now closed, dark, empty store front theater in the little town of no-where North Dakota at 1:30 in the morning.

    True story…. was the short, round-ish, boy who had to run (with his much faster and sleeker friend Richie) down a dark, stinky alley, dodging trash cans and homeless, rail-boxcar riders when my Dad failed to pick us up after the midnight showing of Night of the Living Dead.
    Richie and I picked up the pace of our journey very very shortly after we stepped into the dark alley and immediately after my initial scream that sounded like someone had just jumped up and down on some poor cats’ tail. Seriously, one deep breath and we were off through the alley, across a dark, drive up bank parking lot; over a railroad track viaduct; another parking lot, more railroad tracks and small railroad side yard. Then we sprinted passed the cop shop with those freaky orange sodium vapor lights that make everyone look undead…even Richie. I know Richie was still alive because he hadn’t been bitten…yet. Still, he looked just like all the recently released, late night, (undead) bar brawlers stumbling around the front steps of the police station. Running and taking my second deep breath, after the first half of what seemed like eternity, I was gearing up for the next block when Richie suddenly screamed like my little sister. I don’t know what he said or came out of his mouth, but I ran faster. I was passed the side garage, between hearse #1 and hearse #2, and at the top of four steps that my feet never touched when I bounced off the front entrance of the city morgue. Pausing a moment to get the full effect of my new concussion, I leaned against the bloody (OK it was just sweaty) morgue door where I could hear the ragged, gasping breath of the undead inside the morgue clambering to get me and Richie.

    As soon as the stars in my head were less bright than the ones in the sky, I took the third deep breath of the evening and bounded, as sure footed as any gazelle with a broken leg, across the lawn of Trinity Mission and Emergency Shelter using a very creative zigzag sort of pattern. My recently concussed, oxygen deprived brain ‘knew’ a zigzag pattern would help me avoid the thousands of undead, rail riding boxcar jumpers who had stepped outside to enjoy an undead smoke before the 2:00a.m. Mission curfew required the doors to be locked. I was absolutely certain all one million undead rail riding friends of Boxcar Willie were going to bite us and make us one of the living dead.

    It was at this point in my life, on the front lawn of Trinity Mission, where I was converted. I became convinced….that salad eaters run faster and don’t taste as good to the undead as meat eaters. Right then and there, I vowed to eat only salad – no dressing – just dry lettuce…with maybe a little fat free dressing – for the rest of my life.

    Having been Vegatized, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel. I thought is was Jesus coming to greet me since he and I were getting mighty close given all the prayer that had been happening very recently in my life. Bursting into Heaven, which looks remarkably like a Seven -11, I realized it was not Jesus but a construction foreman turned undead shopper standing over the corpse of my recently undead friend Richie. Poor Richie…how awful to come to be bitten and made one of the undead only to fall onto his final, eternal resting place on newly laundered, red, Seven -11 door mat. Ooooh to be within an arms length of the work boots of undead, construction worker, Jesus, while he filled a gallon sized cup from the only Slurpee machine on this side of the pearly gates which was securely bolted down onto the golden streets of…

    I had no choice but to leave Richie lying on the red carpet next to undead, work boot wearing, construction worker, Slurpee drinking, Jesus. I had to get out of there, I had to prove I was alive so I lurched towards the counter while gasping for air and clutching my chest as a form of sign language to let the living know it was my heart making all the racket. Being assured my heart was about to explode, I politely handed the wide eyed, undead, store clerk #2 a sweaty quarter and croaked that I needed change to use the phone.

    Richie, being my best and only undead friend, chose to stay inside crying while trying repeatedly to stand upright on the red carpet of Seven-11 Heaven in order to come to grips with his new life as one of The Living Dead.

    Finally upright, Richie was again overcome by his new undead lifestyle and began to weep. It was when he chose to remain in Seven -11 Heaven, on the red carpet, in front of the doors to practice his undead sway and moan that I realized the friendship between the living and the undead would be short lived. As was deciding how to get out the doors with him standing there swaying, moaning, and weeping, the final bits of his humanity were thrown up and out of him. For an undead guy Richie’s aim was still pretty good. He got some of his humanity in the trash can, but much of it splattered against the glass doors. There was humanity everywhere!

    Using the door on the left to step outside, I reflected that life was strange. I didn’t remember buying Red Hots at the theater, but apparently Richie made a purchase and hadn’t bothered to share with me, his only living friend. I left Richie gripping the door handle, swooning on the red, Seven -11 Heaven floor mat while his new friends Mr. Undead, Work boot Wearing, Construction Worker, Slurpee Drinking Jesus and Mr. Undead Seven-11 clerk #1 were talking to him and slapping him on the back to congratulate him on making the transition to become completely undead.

    Given the fact I could no longer breathe because my lungs had fallen out somewhere along the way, I shambled as fast as I could across the dark parking lot to the Seven-11 Heaven pay-phone on a stick with a useless silver, gum encrusted, wind shield. Continuing my reflection, I realized this whole journey to the pay phone would not have been necessary had my Dad not become one of the undead while Richie and I were at the midnight showing of “Night of the Living Dead” in Nowhere, North Dakota.

    Richie’s and my RETURN TRIP to the theater would not have been necessary either had I remembered to tell my Dad where we were AFTER he apologized again and again and again for falling asleep which was AFTER he answered the phone and grunted something about late night idiots calling people in the middle of the night to wake him up. My Dad’s conversation with me happened just BEFORE he left the house to pick us up…at least that was what my undead sounding Mom said when I called the house the second time.

    I waved to undead Richie and pointed towards the theater and certain desolation. Immediately the doors of Seven -11 Heaven were flung open by Undead, Work boot Wearing, Construction Worker, Slurpee Drinking Jesus and Undead Seven-11 clerk #1 who were hurling my wide eyed, undead best friend into the parking lot. I was amazed…Richie could still run pretty fast for an undead guy.

    The experience and friendship…not the movie…is what makes this my favorite movie of all time.

    2. The Emerald Forest. (It was North Dakota…We didn’t have trees or Bat People! Of course I loved this movie.)

    3. The Name of the Rose (Actually any film starring Sean Connery ties for #3 with the exception of that horrible Sean ‘the Dragon’ Connery film. My retirement plan from a very young age has been to grow up and be Sean Connery.)
