The Naked Truth

between the sheetsTonight I speak to a few hundred middle school kids about sex at an event at a church near Chicago called The Naked Truth.

I’m really proud of this church for addressing this subject so candidly with families, a subject that is often hushed by the church. I’m excited to share the explicit truth with these young people, especially in a culture where they hear so many explicit lies.

Here’s the intro to my talk:

Our culture creates a lot of confusion about sex. When we read our Bible or go to church, we hear how God’s design is to wait for sex and save that kind of intimacy for marriage. But when we turn on the TV or listen to many of the songs on our favorite playlists… they say quite the opposite. Naturally, this makes many of us wonder. Who is right?

That’s what we’re going to examine in the next hour. We’re going to embark on a journey to discover The Naked Truth.

Truth. Think about that for a second. If I asked any of you, “Do you want to know the truth?” Instinctively, you’d probably all answer, “Yes.” I mean… who wants to be lied to, right? But ask yourself, Do you really want to know the truth? Because, sadly, pleasure often wins out over truth. Let me say that another way: many people choose the temporary thrill over what they know is best for them in the long run. That’s what often happens “in the moment.” People act foolishly when they act impulsively.

So here, removed from the pressures and temptations of the situation, in a few moments of introspection, we’re going to look at what’s truly best for us. We’re going to set momentary pleasure aside and examine the truth about sex.

Specifically, I want to address the two most common questions I hear from young believers today about sex:

  2. CAN I WAIT?

Let’s address each of these questions…

  1. i don’t think there is any more relevant topic that needs to be talked about to this generation! With all the lies and junk that is out there it is urgent that we speak the truth to our students and engage in meaningful discussions with them. thanks Jon for being on the front-line in the fight!

  2. Jonathan, I read this email 2 days after your presentation and sat here wishing I had read it earlier to pray with you! Wow! Thank you for standing in the gap for the young people of today. I believe those who attended your event 2/14 were blessed to hear you speak God’s truth to them. We are in a media/culture war and thank you for being a voice for God’s truth. I will continue to pray for you and for the families and youth who are hearing/reading your messages.
